關於若葉 / About Wakaba

I started the blog in late January. However, for all kinds of reasons, I only got the chance to write my first post now, in late April.

I grew up with the wide spread of Internet. The first lesson when I started to use the Internet was "not to use your true identity when you register." It seems to be a bit old fashion now, however, it has become a ritual when I register in a new website, decide my user ID, or decide what "name" I will use in this service.

The user name I used on the google account is 兩儀若葉. It looks like a Chinese name, it can be pronounced in Chinese, but actually it is Japanese. The pronunciation in Japanese is Wakaba (若葉) Ryogi (兩儀) - in Chinese and Japanese, we say the family name first and then the given name.

The reason I chose to use a Chinese (or Japanese name) instead of an English one, is to show the identity of where I came from. English is my second language and I am mostly comfortable to study with English in higher education or chat with native or non-native speaker. However, to reflect my origin on my display name is important for me. I believe that even I am adjusting a new culture, I still have my own cultural background and speak my own language.

It's a pity that after Google has worked on international services for so many years, they are still not capable of showing different display names for character users and alphabet users. For character users like me, to translate my name into alphabet spelling makes no sense for in our language.

I write this blog also for my friends and family back in my country. So, I chose my display name in my language for a better understanding in Chinese users. I apologize for the inconvenience to English user, especially my friends who the only common language we speak is English.

So, no matter in which name you know me in reality, on this blog, my display name is Wakaba (若葉). Chinese is my mother language, and English is my second language. The other language I speak or understand a little bit are Japanese (N3 level) and German (basic). Now I am a Taipeian living in Adelaide.

This is me.
